For Your Pre-Beach Viewing: The 11 Best Body Positive Memes on the Interwebs
June 7, 2018
Have you ever scrolled through Instagram, Facebook, or your preferred social platform and thought “Ugh, I wish I had their hair” or “They’re literally perfect"?
Every human occasionally falls into that comparison trap, and, unfortunately, social media feeds the habit—especially when it comes to body comparison.
Studies have shown that social media has a negative effect on body image, particularly for women. Most recently, a survey of 100 female college students in the U.K. showed that “those who spent more than an hour a day on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest are more unhappy with their bodies than others who spent less time on the sites,” according to the New York Post. The current season (winter, spring, summer, fall) can also impact body comparisons. “Summer can amplify anxiety over body image insecurities,” Eating Disorder Hope, an organization that aims to end disordered eating behavior, explains on their site. “With constant reminders to have the perfect bikini body, it can be a challenge for even confident [individuals] not to become critical of themselves this time of year.”

The good news in all this: Thanks to the #bodypositive movement and more open dialogue about body confidence, we’re seeing more YouTube videos, GIFs, and viral tweets encouraging people to embrace their bodies rather than compare.
